Health Information Exchange (HIE)
Where are we?
Health information exchange (HIE) is the transmission of healthcare-related data among (healthcare) facilities, health information organizations (HIO), and government agencies according to national standards. For some years now, HIE has been a hot topic in healthcare globally. Significant progress has been made in laying the foundation (e.g., data and information standards) for its implementation. In fact, previous research studies have estimated that HIE market is expanding rapidly--at a compound annual growth rate of 9.5%.
However, pertinent issues such as high implementation costs, slow returns on investment, and interoperability problems have been identified as major impediments to even faster potential growth. Given this excellent business opportunity, three questions come to mind:
- Do you know how much has been accomplished in the implementation, adoption, and diffusion of a comprehensive HIE in healthcare in your local and state healthcare systems?
- What are the major factors impeding the realization of a comprehensive HIE in your healthcare setting?
- What are the major incentives that have propelled the realization of a comprehensive HIE in your healthcare setting?
Global regional comparative insights would be extremely enlightening.
My name is Dr. Wolverine. Some people prefer to call me Dr. W or just W. Besides my thirst for comics, dancing, listening to music, playing soccer and many others, I also love numbers--yes, that's right--anything numbers or anything that deals or attempts to deal with numbers. I also have GREAT passion for research, analytics, and informatics. Next week when I'll not be comicish, dancing, listening to music, playing soccer, I will strive to write something on research--only if and when I am able to secure express permission from my boss; YooFoo! Stay tuned.
